NBCUA wastewater treatment plant gets a unique solar power system
Aditi Justa | Oct 21 2009

Sharp Solar Energy Solutions, a division of Sharp Electronics Corporation, collaborated with Vanguard Energy Partners and proclaimed the installation of 344-kilowatt solar power system at the Northwest Bergen County Utilities Authority wastewater treatment plant in Waldwick, New Jersey. The plant will reduce the carbon emissions by 577,489 pounds and save up to $50,000 annually.

Completed earlier this month, this creatively constructed solar array is built on limited land and roof space. Vanguard, a leader in the design and installation of large-scale solar electric systems, designed and installed a solar canopy structure over the plant’s aeration tanks, using 1,547 Sharp ND-U216C1 216-watt solar modules. The utility with the implementation of renewable solar energy will result in providing nearly 40 percent of the wastewater treatment plant’s electricity needs when operating at full output. The system is estimated to generate 364,742 kilowatt hours annually.

Vanguard Energy Partners, along with Ferreira Construction, performed the tasks like civil engineering, site work and steel erection of the system. In addition, Noveda Technologies’ SunFlow Monitor(TM), a real-time, online energy monitoring system, will track the facility’s power consumption, solar production and system efficiency. This innovative green project was backed by a rebate from the New Jersey Clean Energy Program, a statewide program that offers financial incentives, programs and services for New Jersey residents, business owners and local governments who install renewable energy.
