Southwest Airlines to test the transformed Boeing 737-700 plane
Aditi Justa | Oct 22 2009

Southwest Airlines announced yesterday that it has refurbished its Boeing 737-700 plane to make it green. The group is experimenting with a wide range of eco-friendly materials on this green transformation, which will result in cutting down the weight of the plane to such an extent that some $10.3 million will be saved on the fuel costs.

The Boeing 737-700 plane will incorporate the use of earth-friendly products from the carpet to seat covers to life vest pouches. These products used in the cabin and rest of the plane will eliminate nearly five pounds of weight per seat, or the equivalent of about 472 pounds on the plane. This means that some 9,500 gallons of fuel can be saved annually on each plane. Southwest Airlines will test the new green materials for nearly six months and will check them for durability and ask for customer feedback. If the results are satisfying, only then will the airline go forward with the transformation for the rest of the fleet.
