Using PET plastic for glass bottles, Bacardi’s way to eco-friendliness
Aditi Justa | Aug 25 2009

The perception we have of plastic containers is that they are not recyclable, they pollute and are a menace to the environment. Just to change the way we think, Bacardi Canada brings to use plastic bottles that are more eco-friendly. The company that had been using glass bottles for all of its production since 1988, in instituting official Bacardi Environment policy, is now packing its popular line of Bacardi Breezer rum drinks in Amcor’s patented PET bottles.

This switching to PET bottles will lead to 22 percent reduction in the company’s carbon footprints that are expected to increase in the coming time. Also very interesting to note is the fact that PET is 100 percent recyclable. PET bottles can be recycled into textile fibers for polar fleece, carpets and non-woven products.

Bacardi’s green shift has already drawn many praises from both consumers as well as the agencies in Canada. One such agency is the Liquor Control Board of Ontario that complimented Bacardi’s focus on improving the environment with their packaging. The provincial board claims that the PET containers have successfully reduced waste by more than 90 percent.
